Who We Are

Orwrite was founded with one simple belief: writing doesn’t have to be lonely. Too often, writers find themselves isolated — staring at a blank page, balancing endless distractions, and wondering if they’ll ever make it to 'the end'. At Orwrite, we’ve built a space where every writer, whether seasoned or just starting out, can find encouragement, connection, and focus.

Behind Orwrite is Alex, a writer who knows first-hand the highs and lows of the creative process. From those moments of dazzling inspiration to the seemingly interminable stretches of writer’s block, Alex has been there. She created Orwrite to be the supportive in-person environment she wished existed earlier in her own journey — a place of clarity, confidence, and community.

Writing by the Sea:
Finding Inspiration in Plymouth

Plymouth’s ocean horizon has long been a muse for storytellers. In this post, we explore how its coastal charm fuels creativity — and why it’s the perfect setting for a writing retreat.

About

Plymouth is a hive of creativity. How could it not be? With the moors on the doorstep and the world literally waiting beyond the Sound. It's a writer's paradise; the 'village' city by the sea. As a writer who grew up in Plymouth, I get it.

I also get that writing, contrary to popular belief, ain't that easy. More importantly, I know it takes a village to raise a ... story. It's true! Even before dealing with editors and publishers and marketing strategists, writers need community. Sadly, that community can't write the book for you (when you just can't get your head around the blindsiding plot twist that pulls the whole thing together). But it can provide a sounding board, sympathy and reassurance. Because writing can be a lonely business... but it doesn't have to be.

And that's what Orwrite is all about: Community. A 'village' of writers to nurture, support and celebrate together in an environment designed to encourage writerly creativity. It isn't exclusive, it's accessible. To anyone. From either side of the Tamar. Because writing is a craft that develops with every new draft, regardless of experience. Because learning to write isn't just demonstration, it's participation.

Because, most importantly, you'll never write alone.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple: to give writers the time to write, the space to connect with other writers in a supportive community where they belong.

That means:

  • Welcoming retreats across the city and overlooking Plymouth Sound, where tea and coffee are always on tap.

  • Practical courses designed to build confidence, spark creativity and strengthen craft.

  • A community where feedback is encouraging, never intimidating.

We believe every writer deserves a safe, inspiring space to explore their voice — without gatekeeping, without judgement and without pressure.

Creative Writing

Why It Matters

Writing is hard work. It takes persistence, courage, and a little bit of magic. But it’s easier — and more enjoyable — when you don’t have to do it alone.

At Orwrite, we help writers by:

  • Removing distractions — offering focused retreats away from everyday interruptions.

  • Building confidence — through guided prompts, structured sessions, and supportive coaching.

  • Fostering community — because when you write alongside others who understand, the empty page feels less daunting.

We’re here to remind you: you’ll never write alone.

Perfection: The Writer's Nemesis
Writing's dead easy. One draft and it ends up on the bestseller's list. Right? If only it were that simple. Few writers experience the single draft miracle, while the rest of us chase the perfect draft. But hey, we're writers. Quests are what we yearn for. You may have noticed last post, I mentioned the writer's nemesis: the blank page. Perfection too, according to this post's title is their nemesis. Writers, it turns out, have a lot of them. Like Hercules, the poor writer must battle a...
